About Larry...
Over the past 30 years, Larry has proven to be an accomplished singer, songwriter, composer, producer, music director, and music educator. His catalog of works includes well over 100 pop songs, choral works, instrumental arrangements and original, instrumental compositions. Since the mid-80's he has released a number of pop and country songs to national and international radio. His sacred/choral music can be found in several hymnbook publications, including Glory and Praise, and the CBWIII. He has collaborated with numerous writers, including David Blamires, Rena Gaile, and Debbie Fleming. Larry has just completed composing a three-song cycle for Voice (soprano or tenor), and Piano, as a tribute to Richard Taverner, a great friend, and partner of one of Larry's closest friends who passed away suddenly in June 2006. The text for this work is drawn from Emily Dickinson.CLICK HERE, to hear the piece. It should start automatically, and runs for 10 minutes.
Larry has been writing songs and performing since his highschool days in the 70's. His musical influences include The Beatles, James Taylor, CSNY, Jackson Browne, Peter Gabriel, and Bruce Cockburn, whose guitar stylings had the greatest impact on Larry's own playing. During the 70's, Larry and friend/collaborator Steve Merchant appeared regularly at various coffee-houses in Toronto, including The Fingerboard, Harbourfront, Fat Albert's, and later, as a solo artist, at various Christian coffee-houses.
Larry studied guitar at Toronto's Humber College, where he struck up a friendship with the late Ron Dann (producer/arranger/steel guitar), with whom Larry spent 11 productive years as an arranger, copyist, performer, and friend until Ron's untimely death in 1991. Their association included work on numerous recordings, jingles, live concerts, and two seasons on the CBC Television's Country In My Soul, with host Sylvia Tyson.
Upon graduating from Humber, Larry recorded an album of original Christian songs entitled, "Living Jesus," which was distributed in the U.S. by NALR/Epoch Universal. He followed up that recording with several, original pop songs for airplay through Axe Records, (Calling Me Back, and Just A Way, produced by Ron Dann and Chad Irschick (Producer: Susan Aglukark, The Rankins, Ron Hynes, Bruce Guthro and others); I Rely, produced by Chad Irschick); as well as a single on RDR Records, (Glad For You, produced by Chad Irschick).
In recent years, Larry has been collaborating with other songwriters David Blamires, (jazz vocalist,Pat Metheny Group), Mike Racioppa & Paul Dick; Rena Gaile, Debbie Fleming,; and Mike Francis.
Larry also had the good fortune to work with the late John Allan Cameron, on live performances (singing & guitar), and as a producer and arranger on John Allan's recordings on the Margaree Sound label. 1997 also saw the release of a recording of traditional Cape Breton music, in collaboration with Murray Daigle entitled "Wish I Was With Them Again" by Daigle and Folk.
Larry appeared as a cast member on The Rita MacNeil Show on CBC. He has appeared on 100 Huntley Street, and Food For Lifeand the National Catholic Mission where he also acted as Music Director. In addition to his live performances, he continues to work as a session singer, and music educator, teaching high-school vocal & instrumental music, MIDI technology, and directing an a cappella jazz vocal group. Larry spent more than seven years singing with the award-winning a cappella jazz group, Hampton Avenue, under the direction of Debbie Fleming. The group recorded two wonderful CDs, the second of which, "Everybody Sing!" was produced by Debbie Fleming and Larry. Larry's "Gathering of Friends" was included in the song list on that recording, and was well-received whenever the group performed it live. The group performed in numerous venues, including appearances on CBC Radio's "Vinyl Cafe," City's "Breakfast Television," and Global TV's "News at Noon." Hampton Avenue can be heard on Toronto's CJRT 91.1 FM. Larry's latest release is on Dick McVey's just-released"Nashville's Best" compilation CD. The CD includes two songs from Larry's "Caught In The Light," CD, and includes songs by Holly Dunn, Laura Wilkie, and other talented indie artists. This CD marks the first time Larry's songs have been released to Radio stations throughout the US.
